Japan mobile phone shipments up 2.2% in June

TOKYO —

Mobile phone shipments in Japan in June rose 2.2 pct from a year before to 5,228,000 units, up for the first time in five months, the Japan Electronics and Information Technology Industries Association said Monday.

Launches of new handsets with upgraded performance and designs are believed to have stimulated consumer appetite in the reporting month, association officials said.

Shipments of handsets capable of receiving “one-segment” digital terrestrial television broadcasts jumped some 2.5-fold to 3,738,000 units, with cumulative shipments coming to 36,823,000 units.

Shipments of personal handy phone system handsets rose 7.4 pct to 143,000 units, the association said.

I must admit I fell for the marketing, and I have my regrets. My old keitai was much easier to use, faster, lighter--and worst of all--there was absolutely nothing wrong with it. Now I have all these functions I don't need and a monthly payment plan for the next 2 years.

I did the same thing a few years back - I 'upgraded' my old 2G Vodafone to a 3G model and regretted it for the next year and a half. I recently got a new phone because I thought my old one was broken (turns out it was just a bad SIM card) but the new phone is much more like the old 2G model - I will never get another phone again.
